2 out of 3 meat eaters would rather give up meat than their car
Date: 2007-01-31
This is a completely unscientificly obtained statistic, but interesting none the less. Ask other meat eaters you know, and ask veggies whether they'd rather give up dairy & eggs or their car.
I was on the BBC Radio Berkshire Morality Panel today (a good laugh). and asked the following question:
"In light of the recent UN report putting livestock as the bigest contributor to climate change and yesterday's reporting of the UK Government's suggestion that meat and dairy rationing may be necessary in the future to save the planet, which would you be more willing to give up completely: your car or eating meat?"
Both the milkman and the mum, self-declared ardent meat eaters, said that their life would be more awkward without their car than meat. The mum didn't even reckon it would be much of a heardship. The teenaged girl said she'd give up car travel as she doesn't use a car much anyway.
So when environmental campaigning groups say to you that they can't lobby on people's dietary choices but they can on vehicles, tell them about this. Reducing animal product consumption may actually be a softer target!
Let me know what answers you get! Best wishes, Sophie

The Guardian suggests veganism to save the planet

Of all the seasonal homilies about "green" Christmases and "sustainable" new year pledges - an oxymoron if ever I've heard one - only one stuck in my mind: each of us could make a bigger contribution to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases by becoming a vegan than by converting to an eco-friendly car.
