This is not your usual Indian restaurant. The Spice Route is inspired by an expert chef using fresh ingredients and a fusion of ideas. It is famous (Tony Blair has reputedly eaten here) and posh, which is rather reflected in the prices. It's very likely you'll think it is worth it!

There are always interesting things on the regularly changing menu for vegetarians and vegans, though book with good notice if you would like a dessert. Booking a table tends to be essential here at weekends. Olive oil is used rather than butter ghee.

I've been here twice, and only upon my second visit did I realize what was peculiar about this restaurant. First, the music is super low. Second, the lights are too bright. And, third, the staff seems tense, or at least like they do not like working there. I got the sense that the servers understand veganism, but they were all over the place, so you end up getting served by several different people during your meal. As such, you really have to keep mentioning that you are a vegan, because it doesn't seem like there is much communication going on in the kitchen or among the waiting staff… The second time I was there, the famous “owner” was in, and she cast even more tension on the space, as it wasn't very busy, and maybe she was bothered by that. In fact, I'd say that the place is a little “charmless”. Still, the food is very good, and I would go again, but not on a weekday, as it feels a little too rigid when there's not much going on. Portions are not huge, and there are not tons of vegan options, but it's food you won't get elsewhere.

I find the Spice Route quite an elegant restaurant with a large vegetarian selection. I think about 50% of the menu is vegatarian! The choices are wonderful and not like your usual greesy Indian restaurants. I really like this one.
