Description
Chennai Dosa has moved to the centre of town and this branch has been replaced by Cafe Madras at this location, but with a similar menu . It has broken off from the Chennai Dosa chain. Tell us what you think of it now the ownership has changed (Jan 2011). I hope the service is more friendly!
Previous description - is it still true?

"After struggling to find parking spot. I had then resorted to parking up in the most bizarre of back alleys. The place was empty and still the reception had no idea of my reservation. After scampering around to set up a table, the shoddy menus arrived promptly. What can i say about the food?... Dosas looked like they were pre-made, half the items on the menu were not even available and to top it off the waiter didn't take no notice of the only table occupied. I would stick to the restaurants in town for a better experience."

"fantastic food and a great improvement from chennai dosa. I have visited both of them Simple comparisons - Some of the dishes like poories in Chennai dosa sometimes almost feel like that you need a hammer with them. The coffee in chennai dosa has become the western coffee unlike the small steel cup which you used to get in original chennai dosa and now cafe madras . I think chennai dosa is living on its name more than the quality where as Cafe madras us really picking up fast..."

"One of the rare places that actually "runs out" of their main items (Idli, Medu Vada, etc) on peak times! We've experienced this 3 times in a row. Here's my typical peak-time experience - about 15-20 mins to get yourself a place, another 10-12 for someone to even notice you (leave alone taking an order), about 20 mins for your order to arrive (your refills never do!) and your initiative to walk to the counter to pay the bill. They've often forgotten to give us glasses for water, at least one plate has to have the spoon forgotten and it's practically impossible to catch the eye of the already overworked waiter. The only reason I go back is because there is no other choice!"

"Excellent for lunch delivery at work. The food is good, reasonable priced and delivered to your workplace in a very smart lunch box( easy to eat in the office without any mess)."

"Food - delicious! I'm a carnivore, but this is definitely a place to ignore the token meat dishes & stick to the traditional Tamil vegetarian & fish (if that doesn't offend your principles) dishes. Lovely! Service is quite friendly nowadays, Plenty of smiles, happy to explain the food to ignorant Westerners (& one Japanese in our party last night), & the waiter gently hinted that we might have ordered too much. He was almost right, but it tasted so good we finished it anyway, then had to slowly sip our beer in the pub afterwards because we were stuffed. Decor is spartan, but it's clean. Mostly Indian clientele usually, with lots of families, especially weekend lunchtimes. We've been back a few times since our first visit 6 weeks ago."

"Fantastic food and great variety for vegetarians. we have eaten many times since it opened, have taken friends and family there and everyone has loved it. The food is 'proper Indian' rather then the oily stuff that you get in so called Indian restaurants. The mango lassi is to die for. A family of 4 can easily eat there for £20. You really get excellent value for your money. Hope you enjoy it. "

"The flavours of the chutneys and textures of the dosas are as authentic as can be ( having been born in good ole' Madras). Glad there are no excuses of trying to adapt to the blandness of modern cooking. The atmosphere needs to be de-cramped for lack of space, and especially for the waiters and staff to breathe easy. That's popularity for you!!!!! "

"We had a yummy meal for 3 of us here after the cinema one night, and got stuffed silly for only £12.50. The speedy service meant we still got home in good time. "

"This is the 2nd visit. The first visit the queues were down the road and we had to wait more than half and hour to get in. As a consequence it was obvious they were barely coping and a lot of customers were getting annoyed. I am glad say things have settled down. The dosas are excellent, and we had the veggie buffet which although at first glance did not look like it had a lot of vegetables in it was delicious, a array of wonderful tastes, very very spicy, which suits us but be warned. The staff were very friendly and the prices are very good. All in all excellent. They do a breakfast buffet too will try that next! "
