Aangan outside

Aangan Indian Vegetarian restaurant used to be 100% vegetarian, and thus it was well worth putting up with the glaring lighting for delicious and reassuringly veggie food. No longer apparently. Aangan is now serving meat. Reading no longer has a vegetarian restaurant.

Aangan's vegetarian menu will be a delight for those of you who have the good fortune to try vegetarian South Indian cooking, and if you've not, be prepared for some tasty discoveries. We particularly enjoy the dosas.

Aangan inside It appears the idea for the restaurant came from the needs of the growing number of Indian consultants in the Thames Valley - they were all popping into London to get good South Indian food.

To ensure their clientèle get what they are accustomed to at home, Aangan has brought its chefs from Indian.

Have a read of the menu.

Excellent choice for vegetarians in spite of the restaurant not being veg now. The ambiance has completely changed with dimmers, candle lights, proper crockery. The service was very good and food was excellent as usual.

We were delighted when this place opened and visited it a lot to start with. The atmosphere has never been great but we were always seated upstairs which was a bit better. However we would not choose it for a special meal in the evening. On recent visits the upstairs has been closed and we sat downstairs which quite frankly was awful. While ok for a lunch time quick meal it would not attract anyone for an evening. The last evening we kept our coats on we were so cold. It's a shame that they have introduced meat as a way to attract business when the fact that it was totally veggie was its one saving grace that kept me going there.

Sadly, this vegetarian restaurant has a meaty menu as well. Though this has provided more choice for non-veggie friends, service level has now reduced to completely hopeless.

As much as I liked the food it was not compensated by the annoyance at being refused to serve tap water.

I am happy to pay a fair price for food as I can appricate the work that goes into it, but where is the added value in charging to serve tap water.

Just had to tell you, went again, and even better, we had such a warm welcome. They recommended certain dishes to try, and they were wonderful, especially a starter which was a crispy cauliflower. They even made us a vegan pudding. A really lovely meal with lovely people.

When we saw on the web site that the Aangan had opened, we just had to go, cancelled other plans and went that very night. We were not disappointed. The decor is modern, spotless, the staff friendly and helpful and the food.... DELICIOUS. South Indian dishes such as Bhel Puris, Dosas and a wonderful chickpea dish with puffed indian bread. Unfortunately there were no vegan puds (not sure I would have been able to fit one in anyway).

I am not sure the waiter that took our order had a clear understanding of what vegan means but the manager certainly did and although we had plently to choose from, he said if we gave them notice, he would be able to do even more! He told me that before they opened he was not sure if going totally veggie was the way to go but business had been so good he now thinks it is. This place is excellent value many dishes at just £4.00. For four of us eating far more than one normally would, because we wanted to try so much, the bill came to just £50 that included drinks.
