Kathmandu Baithak - Reading

AVN Score: 0.2 Kathmandu Kitchen Omnivore Nepalese Restaurant

Their menu is not greatly different from a vegetarian perspective to most other Indian restaurants in Reading, but they differentiate themselves by their firm understanding of what vegetarian and vegan mean, thanks to Reading Hunt Sabs regularly eating there. They also have a ceoliac certificate. The dishes are well made and not overly oily.

The name of the place is changing, so let us know if you know what it is before us, and if this has changed what they serve at all.

If you book a group meal here with good notice, they will really take you seriously and invent off the menu things, and are happy to take up suggestions from you.

Our National Vegetarian Week 2005 celebration meal was held here and was fabulous. We had about 40 people who all raved at the special vegan feast with a strong Nepalese influence plus wide use of dairy alternatives, like soya yogurt, tofu instead of pane er, and dairy-free completely delicious kulfi. We'll have to do it again.

As a vegan in Reading I find it very hard to eat out but KK has been my lifesaver. I eat there almost once a week now and the food is always fast, fresh and authentic and doesn't dent the wallet either. Cheers.

I've been to the KK for my second time, but my first time since the renovations and new ownership. This place is very good, and their attention to vegan detail is absolutely commendable. As per usual, I ordered the okra and the aubergine. Both were very fresh!! The rice was lovely: fluffy and light. It's nice to find somewhere to eat as a vegan in Reading when it's almost 11pm!

As a born skeptic...I was reluctant to believe that this restaurant really knows the meaning of "vegan", but after going there, I got the sense that they were above board. Here, however, at the Kat, I honestly felt that the food was the real vegan deal. No hoax, and tasty too. I'll definitely go again!!

For a meaty restaurant I think it is excellent. There is a good choice of veggie dishes and the staff are clued up regarding veganism. It is refreshing not to have to explain your dietary requirements every time you order. My particular favourites are Chana Masala and Vegetable Jalfresi. They also do an excellent stuffed Paratha.

Good vegan dishes: Aloo tama (bamboo shoot and potato) Brinjal (dry or with sauce) lovely aubergine, different to yer average one. Stuffed paratha (bread with chilli, potato, peas etc inside) tasty! Also bottled kingfisher and cobra beer, Carlsberg on tap! dunno about wine, tho'. Just tell them you are vegan and they'll sort out the rest. They even leave off the yoghurt dish with the popadums. and if we go there with a veggie person, they double check that that person CAN eat milk, egg etc. smart! beware of the pilau rice and bhajis, tho' (milk and egg respectively).
