Description

An exclusive tour of Tolhurst Organic Farm in Whitchurch on Thames. This working farm near Pangbourne is part of the Vegan Organic Trust and is a showpiece of sustainable cruelty-free agriculture.

Vanessa reports: "There were 8 of us on Tuesday evening and we all had a really good time - Iain was very informative and it didn't rain once!!  Ket took some photos - which will feature on this website soon!"

The tour lasted about 3 hours and included:- a walk round the fields and the walled gardens with an explanation of:

  • the rotation system (widespread use of long and short term green manures)
  • visiting the propogation facilities in dedicated greenhousing which producies over 75,000 plants/year
  • an explanation of vegetable compositing for small scale users
  • an explanation of their out of season production using 17 ,000 sq ft of tunnels & glasshouses
  • an explanation of their box scheme

The cost was £10 per person.

Thank you Vanessa for arranging this, and Angela for doing a lot of the taxi-ing about!
